The novel "Memory of Water" traces the journey of one day in the life of the writer and university professor who bears some of the features of the same novelist / Wassini Al-Araj, in the capital Algiers, in a nightmarish atmosphere charged with fear and anticipating the assassination, where the hero has no choice but to reduce his needs for outer space to a minimum. And to summarize all his dealings and obligations in a precise and limited timeline.
This is how the ten chapters of the novel take chronological titles as well, indicating the time in the hour whose timing is at the top of each scene, and each chapter opens to dozens of situations, ideas and reflections on the life of the narrator, the city, and the family. Especially the daughter "Maryam", and the students at the university, And creative friends whose features of existence were distorted by terror, and their conscience gnawed by the rhythm of daily massacres.
This is what we were predicted by the various narrative diagnoses of the black decade in Algeria, where populated cities, human relations, and various facilities of life turned into a hollow ocean, intensifying for the Algerian Mada the feeling of alienation. The novelist succeeded in imbuing the text with that figurative suggestion of violence and the characters' feeling of "exile" and "alienation" and permanent siege by the killers.
